A lot of people don’t realise that there were two 2D Wolfenstein games before Wolfenstein 3D effectively invented the modern FPS. The series has been around since 1981, but is now, amazingly, more culturally relevant and exciting than ever. In older games, hero B.J. Blazkowicz took down the Nazi threat single-handedly, but we didn’t learn much about him, whereas in the more modern iterations, Blazkowicz is a tremendous, well-developed hero, fighting a more technologically advanced form of Nazi scum. The series is beloved for its huge weapons, focused shooting, and – these days – wonderful, moving storytelling. Its importance only continues to grow.
