Metroid started its life, and remains to this day, an absolutely iconic and endlessly influential game franchise. Players control Samus Aran as she attempts to protect the galaxy from Space Pirates and all sort of other evil forces, while harnessing the power of the Metroid creatures. Combining platform gaming, like Super Mario Bros. and exploration games like The Legend of Zelda, the Metroid series (along with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) defined the Metroidvania gaming subgenre in which so many modern games delight. It's also important to note that Same was one of the first prominent female video game characters, laying the way for so many to come after her.
