Cuphead
Cuphead’s inspirations stretch back to the 1920s, when Fleischer Studios formed and began outputting their distinct, iconic animation. There’s more than a bit of Betty Boop and Popeye the Sailor in this rock-hard shooter, in which cup brothers Cuphead and Mugman battle their way through a plethora of expressive, gorgeous cartoon enemies. It’s one of the best-looking games ever made, but it’s much more than that. The extraordinary challenges the game serves up never feel unfair and figuring out a boss’ attack pattern to make sure you stay safe while aiming for their weak spot serves up some excellent old-school thrills.
