Coleco was an American company founded in 1932 and who became hugely successful toy company in the 1980s renowned for selling the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls as well as video game consoles, the ColecoVision and Coleco Telstar.
Back in 1982, they launched 4 tabletop Mini-Arcade machines for Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Galaxian & Frogger. Due to the huge success of these miniature arcade machines (selling approximately 3 million units), they went on to release 3 more machines for Ms. Pac Man, Donkey Kong Jr & Zaxxon.
The video game industry imploded in 1983, sadly taking out Coleco with it.
Coleco have recently launched a kickstarter campaign (which has become fully funded) to create the Coleco Evolved Mini Arcade machines, a modern take on their classic mini arcade machines featuring Robotech: The Macross Saga & Rainbow Brite. These machines have evolved from their classic 1980s bretheren by incorporating a powerful new gaming chipset, full colour LCD display and rechargeable lithium ion battery packs.
Robotech: The Macross Saga
Robotech made its Pop Culture splash down (literally!) in 1985 when Harmony Gold released their epic 85-episode Robotech cartoon series.
Robotech: The Macross Saga puts players in the driver's seat as Earth's last defense in an epic intergalactic battle against alien forces. PLayers transform their Veritechs into 3 modes: Fighter, Guardian, and Battloid to battle on the ground, in the air, and on enemy ships. Each level challenges players to pick the right mode at the right time to successfully take down all sorts of different enemies.
Hallmark's Rainbow Brite TV series launched in 1983 and quickly became a favorite of little girls around the world! This game is designed in a classic retro RPG style filled with colour and joy.
